これから仕事で英語が必要になってくるので、英語を学び直す決意をしました。
私のような聴覚障がいを持つ者でも効率的に学べる学校あるか探してみたところ、その条件に合うのがILSランゲージスクールでした。

なおみ先生の授業では、主に口話・筆談を交えながら学んでいますが、先生は聴覚障がい者相手に慣れていることもあって、話す時は聴覚障がいに配慮したような、遠慮しがちなゆっくりした口調ではなく、ハキハキとした感じで遠慮なしの口調でお話するので言葉が掴みやすく、同じことも丁寧に繰り返して教えてくれますので、初めて英語学習が楽しくなりました。

最初は、まずTOEIC(R)高得点を目指す目的でしたが、中学レベルの英語もろくに身に付いていない私は、なおみ先生の提案でまず中学英語の基礎や英文法理解から行う独特の基礎レッスンで学び直していくことにしましたが、この順番での学び方は自分にビッタリでした。先生は単に決められたコースを用意するだけでなく、生徒1人の個人レベルに合わせて、その人に妥当な学習内容を考えて提案し、そこからレッスンを始めます。

基礎はテキストを読んだり、問題解いたりして学ぶよりも、なおみ先生の口頭でのレクチャーから学んだ方が理解しやすく、身に付きやすいです。学生時代は障がいのこともあって、英語の授業は全くついていけず、恥ずかしながらbe動詞と一般動詞の違いや意味も理解できてないままだった自分がこの年齢になってやっと理解できたのは、なおみ先生との出会いと教え方が大きいと思います。先生、またもっと英語を教えてくださいね!

レッスン内容:
①電話応対:顔が見えない、会ったことがない、話したことがない、という「ないない」だらけの場面である電話応対について、”May I have your name?”といった初歩から実用的な会話までをロールプレイングを通して習得できる。

②日本文化:海外の人と会話をするということは正に「異文化コミュニケーション」。日本の事を知らないと深い話もできない。そういった観点から日本を客観的に見て感じることを英語での会話を通して、中身と伝えるスキルの双方を習得できる。

なおみ先生は、生徒、個人個人のレベルにあった内容でレッスンを進めてくれるので、無理なくレッスンにのぞめます。なおみ先生は、話を聞きだして英語を話すように誘導するのも上手です。たくさんの生徒さんがいるのに、その人の趣味や前に話しした内容をとてもよく覚えていて、それに関連して質問してきてくれたりするのでこちらも話をしやすいです。

TOEIC(R)のレッスン時は、英会話半分、TOEIC(R)勉強半分で1年間くらいTOEIC(R)のレッスンをお願いしていました。家では、「毎日少しでも!」と思い、listening の問題集を数問やり、レッスンではなおみ先生に問題集を解きながら文法を教えてもらいました。一人で参考書を読んで文法を理解するよりも、やはり口頭で説明を受けた方がわかりやすいなぁ・・・と思いつつ勉強していました。今はTOEIC(R)の為の勉強はしてませんが、また仕事も落ち着いたら挑戦したいと思っています。

「単に英語を学ぶとか教えられるという次元ではなく、自分の乏しい英語の能力を引き出してくれるという感じがしました。向き合って教えてくれるという感じで、まさしくこれが教育(Educate)だといえます。又、中高年にとって、改めて教えられるということに衒(てら)いがあります。しかし、私どもの中高年の威厳や流儀を先生はよく承知で、○×では気がすまない私どもの疑問を丁寧に解きほぐし、伊東流の品格のある教育にいつの間にか乗っていたというのが実感です。」

海外赴任直前に、急遽、今まで受験した事もないTOEIC(R)スコア(640点)を要求され、還暦を目前にして短期集中で始められました。スタート当初、「一日何時間でも勉強するので、ぜひよろしくご指導を」とのことで、お忙しい仕事の合間に通ってくださいました。受講期間中、網膜剥離でテスト用紙のマス目も見えなかったこともあったそうですが、いっさい言い訳もされず、見事目標達成です!教師として、そして一人の人間として、たくさん勇気をいただきました。これから世界を目指す次世代の方たちへの良い励み、刺激、そして目標となるものと確信しています。

I was very satisfied with Ms. Ito’s classes. She was able to arrange classes to fit my schedule, and was also able to customize her lessons to suit my individual needs as a student. When I was confused, she was able to explain things in English quickly and clearly. I have studied Japanese with many teachers, and Ms. Ito is one of the very best teachers I have had. Naomi Ito Sensei
It was beginning of 2007 when I first met her, and I have not regretted once since then choosing her as my Japanese teacher. She has amazing teaching skills tailored to every individual whether it is for conversational, grammar, reading, test preparation or combination of all.

When I first started, I had my ears catching Japanese quite quickly and understanding basic conversations, but did not dare to speak it out loud as I didn’t have to speak Japanese at my office. Realizing that, Naomi sensei never spoke to me in English, despite the fact that she is totally fluent, but always in Japanese and was patient until I answer things in Japanese. While doing so, it naturally induced me to speak more and more. Also, she always made her lessons in connection with real life situations, for example, when I finished the lesson on how to talk on the phone, she forced (but with no threatening ;)) me to call 104 and had me ask the phone number of a restaurant. Surprisingly, it worked out OK and it actually made me break through my fear of speaking Japanese in the real world. What was more practical was that she was very aware of cultural differences between Japan and foreign countries so that her teaching was easier to understand.

Not limited to the practical aspect, she gave quite formal lessons regarding grammar and Kanji, which made the lessons more diverse. When I was preparing for Japanese Language Proficiency Tests, she would recommend good materials for preparation and gave good tips for studying and choosing the right answer, not to mention giving me right amount of homework, which most of time I could not finish them all however small amount it had, and kind explanations.

It has been more than 2 years but I have never been gotten tired of learning from her as she approached with different teaching methods. In addition, she always made a huge effort to be flexible with schedule, which enabled me to study with her such a long time. It is always good to have a teacher who understands me and knows what I need to improve on.

However, my stay in Japan is getting to an end, which is sad and unfortunate, but I would love to find her again if I should have another chance to come back to Japan. I am very grateful to her for what she has done for me so far. One thing that makes me jealous is that she is and will be the same nice and excellent teacher to every other student, not just for me, which makes her greater teacher.

이토 나오미 선생님
내가 처음 나오미 선생님을 소개 받은 건 2007년 초. 그 이후 계속 선생님과 일주일에 한번씩 공부를 해 왔고, 선생님을 만난 것을 후회한 적이 한번도 없다. 한 언어를 배운다는 건 생활에서 사용 할 수 있는 일상 대화 뿐만 아니라, 그 나라의 문화, 우리나라와의 문화차이, 문법, 한문의 사용 및 읽는 법 등 매우 다양한 부분이 필요한데, 선생님은 이 모든 부분을 골고루 섞어 가면서 수업을 진행하여 내가 공부하는데 지겹지 않도록 이끌어 주셨다. 게다가 내가 일본 생활을 하면서 필요한 부분에 따라서 공부 방법을 맞추어 주셨는데, 내가 회화가 부족하다고 느낄 때는 회화를 하도록 재미있는 토픽을 준비해서 대화를 유도하였고, 일본어 능력시험을 준비할 때는 필요한 교과서 및 문제집을 골라주고 시험에 대비할 수 있도록 도와주시기도 하였다.
기억에 오래 남을 수업 하나는, 전화 받는 법을 배운 후, 내게 직접 전화번호 안내소에 전화를 걸어 레스토랑 전화번호를 물어보게 한 것이었다. 그 때까지 일본어는 약간 알아듣기 시작할 때였고, 내가 직접 말하는 기회가 거의 없던 때였는데, 직접 그런 식으로 일상과 연결되는 수업을 받으니 일본어를 말하기가 수월해지는 느낌이 들기 시작했다. 그 이후로도 내가 하는 완전 떠듬떠듬 거리면서 하는 일본어를 참을성 있게 듣고, 현명한 질문을 던져서 내가 직접 깨닫게 해서 답을 하게 도와주셨다.
문법이나 시험 등 딱딱한 부분에 대한 공부도 쉬운 설명과 함께, 내가 어려워 하면 약간 속도를 늦춰주거나 쉬운 부분은 건너 뛰어서 진도를 원활히 나갈 수 있도록 도와주시기도 했다. 한국 사람이라서 시험은 다른 외국인 보다 쉽게 공부할 수 있었지만, 일상회화 및 업무 용어 등 보다 다양한 공부를 폭 넓게 할 수 있어서 참 좋았다.
선생님이 나에게만 이렇게 훌륭하고 잘 맞는 선생님이 아니라 모든 학생들에게 친절하고 능력 넘치는 선생님이란 게 좀 질투가 나긴 하지만, 그러한 면이 선생님을 더욱 훌륭하게 만드는 것이라 믿는다. 이제 내가 일본 생활을 잠시 중단하면서 공부도 중단해야 하는 시간이 다가오는데, 참 아쉽고 섭섭하다. 하지만 다음 또 일본에 올 기회가 온다면 선생님을 다시 찾지 않을까 싶다. 그동안 정말 고마웠습니다, 나오미 선생님~!
